Welcome Team at 10:45
We have a great welcome team at the 10:45 service and are looking for some more great people to join us! This is something that you can do as an individual, a couple or a family and is a fantastic way to meet others. In the main we need you to welcome people into church and make sure that newcomers are introduced to others. There are a few practical jobs but nothing too onerous. We have an urgent need for people to help out once a month on either the 1st or 2nd Sunday of the month. To find out more please get in touch with Louise Rostron at firstname.lastname@example.org.
PLEASE PRAY FOR SYRIA
The situation for Syria is desperately sad, and also desperately confusing. Only God knows what is truly going on, and what needs to happen.
On 9th June, the Upper Room will be open for prayer for Syria before and between all services, ie 8.30 to 9, 10 - 10.45, 11,45 - 1, 6,30 - 7. Do not come expecting to be bombarded with information or for anyone to know the answers - this is just for silent or spoken prayer in whatever way you feel comfortable, and for people to come and go as they like.
Care for the Family Evening - 18th June
'Getting Your Kids Through Church Without Them Ending Up Hating God' is an evening put on by Care For The Family in Sheffield on 18th June. See leaflets at the back of church.
Overall, the attendance at Church of England services in 2011 was down by 0.3% from 2010, but our diocese of Southwell and Nottingham showed an increase of 11%, the biggest in the country! Attendance at Christmas services across the country was up by 14.5% (although that may have been due to poor weather in 2010 depressing numbers), infant and child baptisms were up by 4.3% and adult baptisms by 5%. (Figures from Church Times, quoting the Archbishops' Council.)
Congratulations, Canon Lillian!
The new Deputy Mayoress of the Borough of Broxtowe is Canon Lillian Heptinstall, priest-in-charge of St Barnabas’, Inham Nook. Her husband, Councillor Stan Heptinstall, was elected Deputy Mayor at the recent annual Mayor-making ceremony. We extend our congratulations and good wishes to them both. They are looking forward to Stan becoming Mayor of our Borough next year, when Lillian will be installed not only as Mayoress but also as the Mayor’s chaplain. Two busy years, which we trust will be happy and fulfilling, lie ahead of them both!
REMARKABLE FOUNDER OF CHRIST CHURCH REMEMBERED
A plaque on the south wall of the nave in Christ Church honours the memory of Mr Frederic Chatfield Smith who funded the building of “a mission church to serve the parish of Chilwell.”
Beeston Civic Society has now remembered him for this and for much other good work in Nottinghamshire and beyond. They have erected a blue plaque, recently unveiled by the Mayor of Broxtowe, on the gatepost, all that survives of his former 21-bedroom residence, Bramcote Manor in Moss Drive, which was demolished in the 1960’s.
By something of an accident I was invited to attend the ceremony after addressing the Civic Society and, as a postscript, mentioning what a pleasure it was to discover that Mr Smith was responsible not only for financing the building of Christ Church but was also a founding father of Notts County Football Club of which he became president in 1864 when, in his early forties, he was still playing.
His place in the club’s Hall of Fame is assured by having turned out in the first two Derby matches every played against Forest, in 1865-66, in one of which he was captain.
This remarkable man was also a Member of Parliament and, in an active business life, was associated with Smith’s Bank, founded in Nottingham, of which he ultimately became head. Hence the name by which he was best-known, “Banker” Smith.
Christ Church is very different today to the original building which comprised only the main area of seating for the congregation. There was no chancel or sanctuary, no clergy vestry, no ancillary accommodation and no rear extension.
But Mr Smith deserves the gratitude of numerous worshippers down the years for having the vision for a church in Chilwell and for giving it his own evangelical tradition which, of course, continues to this day – as it does at St Michael’s, Bramcote, of which he was a member.
Gill Perkins and Paul Kirkwood are happy to announce their engagement. Paul is coming to Nottingham from Cardiff, and they will be married at Christchurch on 7th September. There will be plenty of cake!'

SCRAMBLERS NEED YOUR HELP!
The great news is that we now have over twenty 3-5 year olds who come to Scramblers regularly on a Sunday morning. This means that we need at least 3 CRB-checked leaders/helpers every week, and we desperately need people who are willing to just turn up on a Sunday morning and help at the session, with no other input or preparation required. If you would be able to help out, even just once a term, please speak to any Scramblers leader or Tim, or email Clare at email@example.com. There will also be lists at the back of church and in the Scramblers room where you can sign up. Do also get in touch if you have any questions. You will be asked to complete a CRB form if you do not already have one for the diocese.

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYERS
The Wednesday am prayer meeting is actively seeking new members. We meet at 7am to 7.30am on each Wednesday morning, in the Upper room at church. We pray for the church, events which are coming up, people we know about who need healing and wider world events. There are currently 4 of us who meet regularly, but we would love to have some more members. Although it is early in the morning, it's a great start to the day, spending half an hour in the company of God and friends, and we find that God speaks to us about the church during our prayers. If you want to stay on afterwards for breakfast, before going to work, then you are welcome to bring your own food, and join Margaret for breakfast. Please think about whether you can join us - we'd love to see you there. Any questions, please contact Margaret Stone firstname.lastname@example.org or 07811357656
Organising a Christ Church Event?
There is now a selection of flyer templates available on the website to download if you are organising a church event. Simply download the flyer of your choice and edit it on your computer using PowerPoint. If there is a type of flyer you can't find, just let the office know and we will upload one. If you have any queries about this facility, please contact the office.
Praying for others
We'd love to grow the teams who pray for people before, during and after our Sunday worship services in Christ Church at 9am, 10.45 and 7pm. For new and existing members, training is provided and you would be part of a supportive team who provide this valuable ministry, which includes healing, prophecy, encouragement and comfort. You don't need any previous experience or ‘expertise', just a heart to pray for others. If you think you might want to serve in this way and would like to explore and find out more, then please contact Fran Beedell (email) or talk to one of the service leaders, or prayer ministry team members after one of the Sunday
In order to help the 9am, 10.45 and 7pm teams incorporate church family notices smoothly into each service and make them as relevant and age appropriate as possible, please can any notices be emailed to the church office by midday on Wednesday of each week? Thanks
